The birth place of planets

Protoplanetary disk

The protoplanetary disk, in which planets and other Solar-System objects form, is an important stage before the birth of our Solar System. As a transition phase between the gas-dominated prestellar core, which is a few thousands times larger than the Solar System, and the planetary system, which is devoid of gas, the disk remains largely a mystery to us. Universality of Stellar Clusters

Initial Mass Function

Stars form in groups when diffuse gas inside the innterstellar medium becomes sufficiently concenntrated to induce gravitational collapse. We call these groups stellar clusters. Intringuingly enough, observations show that the content of the clusters, namely the ratio between the big stars and the small ones, is very similar in clusters formed in all sorts of environments. New Era of Infrared Observation

James Webb Space Telescope

The JWST was launched by the end of the year 2021 and is currently in operation. This new infrared telescope has unprecended observing power. This will shed light on the origin of stars and planets, and will drive many fundamental revolutions of the astrophysical theories. Learn more about what the JWST can bring us from this article (in Chinese) on the webpage of the Physcis Bimonthly journal.
