    我國觀光事業於民國45年開始萌芽，49年9月奉行政院核准於交通部設置觀光事業小組，55年10月改組為觀光事業委員會，60年6月24日政策決定將原交通部觀光事業委員會與台灣省觀光事業管理局裁併，改組為交通部觀光事業局，為現今本局之前身，至61年12月29日「交通部觀光局組織條例」奉總統公布後，依該條例規定於62年3月1日更名為「交通部觀光局」，綜理規劃、執行並管理全國觀光事業。

Development of the ROC tourism industry at the government level began in 1956. In September of 1960, with the approval of the Executive Yuan, a Committee of Tourism was set up within the Ministry of Transportation and Communications; in October of 1966, this Committee was reorganized as the Tourism Council. Finally, on Dec. 29, 1972, the Tourism Bureau has been established under the Ministry of Transportation & Communications and responsible for the administration of domestic and international tourism policy making, execution and development.
